Edes House & Bosham Inn Wedding Photography: James & Gemma’s Rain‑Kissed, Joy‑Filled Celebration

Some wedding days unfold exactly to plan.
Others go rogue — and somehow become even more perfect because of it.

James & Gemma’s wedding at Edes House followed by a reception at The Bosham Inn was one of those days where the unexpected twists created moments none of us will forget. Calm, joyful, resilient and absolutely full of heart — these two handled everything with the kind of grace that makes documentary photography a genuine pleasure.

A Beautiful Start at Edes House

Edes House is one of my favourite Chichester ceremony venues. Although officially a registry office, it feels nothing like one. The building is steeped in history, lined with character, and full of elegant details — the kind of space that elevates a ceremony without needing anything extra.

I met James and Gemma there as guests gathered for their intimate celebration. The ceremony was warm, full of emotion and beautifully personal — exactly the tone they wanted for their day.

Afterwards, the plan was simple:
walk across the road to Bishop’s Palace Gardens for group photos.

Wedding days, of course, love to laugh at plans.

When the Sky Opened

As we reached Chichester Cathedral, the sky shifted.
Clouds rolled in fast — that unmistakable, ominous grey that says: brace yourself.

We took shelter under a tree, exchanging those half‑hopeful, half‑resigned glances couples give when rain threatens their day.

And then it happened.

A torrential downpour.
The kind that turns streets into rivers within minutes.

Guests ran for cover, laughter bouncing between the cathedral walls. Shoes splashed through rising puddles. And honestly?
It made for some epic photographs — the kind of moments you couldn’t stage even if you tried.

Off to The Bosham Inn — And Another Plot Twist

Soaked but smiling, everyone made their way to The Bosham Inn to warm up and dry off.

But when we arrived, poor Gemma was greeted with news no couple wants to hear:

The kitchen… had flooded.
No meals.
No service.

For many couples, this would have been a disaster.
But not James and Gemma.

They laughed. They took a breath. They trusted the day.

And that’s when the luck turned.

Within the hour:

  • the rain stopped

  • the sun broke through

  • the kitchen reopened

  • the energy lifted

  • and the day found its rhythm again

Sometimes the universe just tests your patience before rewarding you.

Golden Light at Bosham Harbour

Once everyone had settled and warmed up, we made our way down to the harbour for a couple’s portrait session.

The earlier storm had cleared the sky in the most dramatic way — huge clouds rolling into the distance, shafts of soft sunlight pouring across the water, and reflections bouncing off the wet ground.

It was magical.

James and Gemma took a quiet moment to breathe and just be together. No posing, no pressure — just a gentle walk along the harbour, soft light, and the calm after the chaos.

A Day That Proved Everything Always Works Out

Their wedding day had:

  • warmth

  • laughter

  • dramatic weather

  • historic architecture

  • flooded streets

  • reopened kitchens

  • harbour portraits

  • and two people who simply trusted the journey

It wasn’t perfect in the traditional sense — it was better.
Authentic. Memorable. Human.
A day shaped not by control, but by calm, love and good humour.

Exactly how a wedding should be.
