Edes House & The White Horse Wedding: Alex & Phil’s Elegant, Heartfelt South Downs Celebration

Some wedding days feel peaceful from the moment they begin — quiet, elegant, unhurried, and full of quiet meaning.
Alex & Phil’s beautiful celebration at Edes House and The White Horse was exactly that kind of day.

Everything about it felt calm, gentle and deeply personal. From a sunshine‑soaked morning in a stunning AirBnB just outside Chichester, to a stroll across the South Downs, to an intimate evening with family — this was a wedding full of emotion, simplicity and real connection.

A Beautiful Morning with Views of the South Downs

The day began in one of the most gorgeous AirBnBs I’ve photographed in — a glass‑fronted house overlooking the rolling South Downs.
Light poured in. The atmosphere was relaxed, warm and full of love.

Alex was joined by her mum, dad, brother and sister — a wonderful little family bubble enjoying:

  • croissants

  • fizz

  • morning laughter

  • and those lovely pre‑wedding flutters

There’s something incredibly grounding about getting ready in a space filled with natural light and beautiful views. It set the tone perfectly.

When hair and makeup were complete, an old Rolls Royce arrived to collect Alex and her dad — the kind of classic, elegant moment that makes a morning feel timeless.

Edes House: A Ceremony Full of Character and Calm

I met Phil at Edes House, a historic Chichester registrar venue known for its character, period architecture and warm ceremony rooms. It’s always a beautiful place to photograph — elegant in a way that feels understated, intimate and authentic.

Phil was surrounded by family when I arrived — calm, welcoming, and clearly full of excitement. Before long, Alex and the Rolls Royce pulled up outside and the ceremony began.

Inside, everything felt peaceful.
Soft light, warm wood, emotional glances, and the easy affection of two people who know each other inside out.

It was a quiet, beautiful ceremony — exactly what suited them.

Afterwards, we stepped into the gardens for some relaxed group shots. Edes House always gives you the perfect balance of greenery and architecture, making it ideal for quick, natural family photos.

Off to The White Horse: A Charming English Pub Wedding

Once the confetti had settled, we made our way to The White Horse — a truly wonderful pub and wedding venue tucked beneath the South Downs. It has:

  • cosy English pub charm

  • gorgeous garden spaces

  • warm interiors

  • incredible food

  • and lovely staff who look after couples like family

Sarah, who manages weddings at The White Horse, always creates such elegant evenings — and this day was no exception.

A Walk on the South Downs (The Perfect Introvert-Friendly Portrait Session)

Alex & Phil are naturally introverted — the idea of posed couple portraits wasn’t something they were excited about.
But this is exactly why I favour my documentary‑style, movement‑led approach.

We headed up onto the South Downs, near the Kingley Vale National Nature Reserve, just a short distance from the venue.
Walking. Talking. Breathing in the fresh hillside air.

Within minutes, they relaxed completely — and before they even realised the “photos” had begun, I already had everything we needed:

  • connection

  • movement

  • tenderness

  • real emotion

  • natural interaction

No posing.
No pressure.
Just the two of them, enjoying a quiet moment together on their wedding day.

Dinner, Speeches & Heartfelt Stories

Back at The White Horse, dinner was elegant and warm.
Sarah’s team delivered an incredible meal — beautifully presented, full of flavour, and perfect for the atmosphere of the day.

The speeches were heartfelt and full of personality:

  • stories from Alex’s dad

  • brilliant anecdotes from Phil’s brother

  • plenty of warm laughter

  • the kind of affection only close family can express

It was intimate, emotional and completely true to who Alex & Phil are.

A Day Filled With Heart

Some weddings are big, loud and full of spectacle.
Others — like Alex & Phil’s — are made of gentle moments:

  • soft morning light

  • drives through winding lanes

  • historic ceremony rooms

  • quiet fields above the Downs

  • laughter from family who know each other so well

  • elegant dinner conversations

  • introverted magic, captured simply and honestly

A beautiful day with two beautiful souls.
