Festival‑Style South Downs Wedding: Imogen & Marmaduke’s Joyful, Colour‑Drenched Celebration
There are some weddings that feel less like “an event” and more like a living, breathing celebration of everything and everyone that shaped two people’s lives.
Imogen & Marmaduke’s festival‑vibe wedding — held in her parents’ field overlooking the sweeping South Downs — was exactly that.
Colourful, emotional, heartfelt, personal and overflowing with the warmth of lifelong friendships, childhood memories and the kind of community spirit you only find in small villages.
Every moment carried its own story.
A Morning in Compton: The Heart of Home
We began the day at Imogen’s family home — a beautiful house tucked into the pretty village of Compton, surrounded by hills, fields and quiet countryside air.
There was something particularly special about the morning atmosphere.
Not just excitement — but familiarity, history, shared childhoods.
Friends who had grown up in the house together. Rooms full of memories. Inside jokes floating through the corridors. It all added an incredible emotional depth to the start of the day.
While capturing the morning moments, something wonderfully unexpected happened:
Imogen’s sister recognised Bella — my partner and second photographer — immediately. They’d gone to school together. A perfect “small world” moment that sparked instant warmth and connection.
Before long, I’d been introduced to her niece and nephew — two bright, energetic little personalities who would weave beautifully through the day.
The morning was filled with laughter, familiarity and emotion — culminating in a beautiful first look with Imogen’s friends, and then with her dad.
His reaction was powerful. The sudden realisation — this is it… this is the moment — washed over him, and it was clear how much love sat in that expression.

A Church Overflowing With Local Spirit
I headed to the church early to capture the atmosphere — nerves, excitement, the warm buzz of familiar faces greeting each other.
One of Imogen’s friends had created an incredible floral display pouring through the church gate — a wild, colourful, joyful installation that set the tone for everything that followed.
The ceremony itself was traditional, but with the kind of comfort and ease that only comes when everyone has grown up together.
It felt like home.
Warm, lighthearted, genuine.
Every smile felt familiar, every glance full of history.
“Anything for the Shot”: The Convertible Moment
After the ceremony, Imogen and Marmaduke hopped into the most beautiful old convertible to drive back home.
And me?
I rode in the boot of a guest’s car to film the journey.
Anything for the shot — and absolutely worth it.
The footage was beautiful.
Wind, laughter, countryside rolling past.
A moment that captured the pure joy of newlyweds heading into the next chapter of their day.
A Festival Wedding on Family Land
Back at the house, the gardens and fields had been transformed.
And I mean transformed.
It looked like a mini festival village, complete with:
-
teepee tents for camping
-
colourful decorations
-
lawn games
-
a face‑painting/face‑decorating station
-
bunting
-
wild countryside everywhere
-
the warmest, friendliest atmosphere
It was playful, vibrant and completely personal — a celebration shaped by the couple and their families, not by a venue template.
Inside the main marquee, everything felt warm and welcoming:
-
layers of colour
-
thoughtful details
-
a dessert table that stole the show
-
long tables packed with friends and family who clearly adored them
It was the definition of meaningful DIY beauty — not forced, not trendy, but authentically theirs.
Speeches With Heart, Humour and Real Emotion
Dinner and speeches were nothing short of powerful.
Every person who stood to speak clearly loved Imogen and Marmaduke deeply. The stories were funny, genuine, heartfelt — the kind of speeches that light up a room.
One of the standout moments was Imogen’s dad sharing stories about preparing “the car” for the wedding — a perfect mix of humour and pride that had the room roaring and wiping tears in equal measure.
It’s moments like these that remind me why documentary photography matters so much.

Fire Pits, Airstream Bars & Evening Adventures
As the sun dipped, the fire pit was lit and guests gathered around — swapping stories, laughing, and soaking up the atmosphere.
A mobile bar built inside an old converted Airstream served drinks throughout the evening and added even more charm to this already magical setup.
In the golden light, Imogen, Marmaduke and I wandered into the neighbouring fields for a few evening portraits — the South Downs stretching out in soft colour behind them.
These were some of my favourites from the entire day: calm, connected, warm.

Fireworks, Dancing & A Night Full of Joy
The celebrations rolled on late into the night — music, dancing, drinks, laughter and the kind of energy that only comes from people who know, love and support the couple completely.
The perfect finale?
A firework display that lit up the sky above the fields — a spectacular end to a day full of heart.
